I don’t have a lot of opportunities to get out of town1,so as October turned to November I began to doubt my chances of going on an urban bike ramble. Happily, my wife and I made a trip to Portland and I caught a ride to school with her and brought a Brompton (hers actually). While she prepared for a long day of class at the Law School I set out on a little trip into downtown Portland before returning home to kids, farm, and work.

Lewis and Clark is south of downtown Portland—it’s in a beautiful setting in the hills, but only a few roads in and out. A privately-owned cemetery allows bike riders to use its roads to connect to Portland’s bike and road network, so I headed that way.

I passed a few people headed uphill, some on acoustic bikes. Apparently there are some people who speed downhill too fast but it certainly wasn’t me on tiny wheels in wet leaves.

The most direct route back was on the west side of the river, so naturally I crossed at the Sellwood Bridge to check out the Springwater corridor

After this much cycling I needed a massive biscuit. Luckily Pine State Biscuits had me covered (in gravy)

Closed it out with a trip across Tilikum Crossing and some downtown stop and go bike lane hustle till I caught my ride out of town.

1. Technically I occasionally exit the city limits but that’s not quite the same
